Character Analysis: Kathy

Zeitoun's wife, Kathy, is a witty and strong willed woman. Kathy was raised as a respectable white Southern Baptist woman who converted to Islam. She met Zeitoun with her son, Zachary. It was not an instant connection. It was until a few years later tat she decided to give Zeitoun a chance. Eventually they built a life together and had three more kids. Kathy and her family live in the Uptown neighborhood of New Orleans, where she helps manage Zeitoun's ever-growing business. She has lived a busy, but steady life up until Zeitoun is taken into prison. She is devastated and a nervous wreck not knowing his whereabouts. After a battle, with the help of a lawyer, she is able to release him from the prison. However, because of the overwhelming mix of emotions she suffered during his absence, Kathy slowly begins to feel the effects of Zeitoun's imprisonment. She begins to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder and although she has the love and support from family and friends, she may never fully recover.
